TLTC OFFROAD TANDEM WHEEL

Not for sale
Ask Derby about this item.

This TLTC tandem wheel was made for exploring the wasteland and hidden oasises of the Great Basin, and where an equipment failure could result in a new relic for the future to discover near the rusted findings from a harness and the unknown bone. The WTB rim and hub are one of the few choices suitable for a wheel with the extreme spoke tensions of this handmade TLTC design. Note the DT Alpine 13/14G drive-side pulling spokes are the loosest family of spokes on the wheel at an average of 285 foot-pounds - still far tighter than any spoke on most all wheels. These are the spokes that are over-stressed in an ordinary wheel during the pedal stroke as they are unable to absorb the increased torque. The drive-side static spokes, which will get looser when the tandem is pedaled, average a whopping 450 foot-pounds of tension! The normally too-loose non-drive static spokes, the ones that usually fail from the sudden reduction and return of tension during a pedal stroke, won't become too loose as they are starting out at 413 foot-pounds of tension!

This wheel was ordered to replace one built by Derby King about 12 years ago. The old wheel was still true and useable, however the rider was justifiably concerned that the high milage on the wheel had worn the rim sidewalls (through use of the brakes)to a point of questionable reliability. We have, in fact, seen a few wheels fail from this cause.

Send your tandem hub, or choose one of ours, if you want a long-lasting wheel that will take away that squirrely feeling you get on the fast, sharp turn descents.
